india needs dating education before dating apps?
Most dating apps in India are solving for perfect matching. But is the real problem a lack of dating education?
Dating is a new concept to most Indians. Our parents and grandparents met through arranged marriages. Some never even sat across from their partner at a restaurant table before marriage.
So as mimetic creatures, growing up, we didn't see how dating works, and didn't internalize it.
Most of us are winging it.
But, there's an unsaid progression to the whole dating scene:
Meet a few potential partners → Hang out and have fun → Filter for taste and preferences → Declare exclusivity → Take it further
No one tells what and how each of these phases actually looks like.
- Are flowers on a first date a sweet gesture or too much?
- Do you need shared political views to go exclusive?
- When do you bring up past relationships?
A handful of YouTube and Instagram influencers are attempting to fill this gap—mostly targeting Indian men.
But the apps themselves? They’re leaving value on the table. There’s a clear opportunity to own this education layer, and monetize it.
Imagine a Zerodha Varsity for dating.
Is anyone building this?
